20 Questions with Todd

1. Favorite place to train?

My home mountains in UT, Alta and Snowbird.

2. What moment made you realize you wanted to do this professionally?

I always had dreams of making a life out of skiing. My ski racing career finished when I graduated college and that was when I knew the time had come to pursue skiing big mountains and making movies.

3. Must-have travel essential?

Water bottles, usually a couple and a Rumpl! I always keep one in my truck as a safety, in case I get stranded in the winter.

4. Sporting hero?

Dana Flahr - An OG ski charger. Roger Federer - I’ve always appreciated the way he carries himself, a true class act. Kelly Slater - I don’t know of many other athletes that move at his level but especially for someone who has been in the game for decades, an inspiration to keep on charging forward.

5. Favorite mountain?

I guess it's not a single mountain but I'd have to say The Chugach Range in Alaska. Amazing skiing in all directions, as far as the eye can see.

6. Best piece of advice you’ve been given?

It's not really a piece of advice I've been given but something I've learned over time. I've found that people in general want to be helpful and if there is an opportunity you want, one of the best things you can do is ask for it.

7. Most memorable moment in your career?

My first Alaska film trip with TGR, I had been working towards that for several years and I had a moment standing on top of a beautiful face where I really felt like I had arrived.

8. Bucket list adventure?

Trekking in Nepal!

9. Favorite way to recover?

Once the season has wound down, we always try and get a trip to either the beach or the desert or both. It’s really nice to change up the environment for a moment and enjoy some of the alternative things to the mountains.

10. Last book you read?

The Poisonwood Bible.

11. Biggest fear?

Being falsely accused, I can’t imagine what it must be like for an innocent person to have to spend time or their life in jail.

12. Favorite TV show to binge?

Schitt's Creek, pretty mindless TV and with so many seasons, it never runs out.

13. How do you take your coffee or tea?

Coffee one hundred percent - Aeropress with a little milk.

14. Best concert you ever attended?

The Black Angels at the Urban Lounge, Salt Lake City.

15. Favorite weather to train in?

Most of the places I frequent in the off season don’t see a ton of rain, so believe it or not, I'm always really excited to go for a run in an overcast drizzle.

16. What are you listening to lately?

I’ve been listening to a lot of Psych rock recently, looking for tracks to use in an upcoming video. The Black Angels (see previous answer) is currently topping the heap.

17. Last place you traveled and why?

El Salvador, for a surf trip!

18. What do you do to prep or "get in the zone"?

When I'm skiing a big line that has multiple critical moments or sections, I like to break them down into individual parts because it helps me realize that the moves required are motions I’ve done hundreds of times, it gives me confidence and reminds me that what I’m about to tackle is centered in my skill set.

19. Funniest sport memory?

There was a time down in Chile some years ago when the lift was having some issues breaking down and Julian Carr and I were stuck on the lift for a bit. We had the opportunity to get a heli bump that afternoon and we were starting to stress that we were going to be late and miss it, so we decided to take matters into our own hands and do a self evac. We plotted what would be the best course of action/softest landing and decided to kick off our skis first then crawl down and hang off the bottom of the foot rest. I’m pretty tall, so full monkey style off the bar wasn’t so bad. We managed to gather our gear and bounce out of there pretty quick… and we made it for the heli lap!

20. What's Next?

We will be putting on our own film tour in the fall, the Powtown Revival. It’s a mini festival of sorts where we get to play a group of short films. In the past it’s been fun and has taken us all over the western US, but this year we may get to include some Canada and Eastern stops too.
